Let us however get a thing or two straight. Metal is not emo, emo is emo. Metal is not about killing everyone and hating everyone. It is not about killing yourself. It is not, generally, about any kind of violent acts (there are exceptions) and it is most certainly not there to possess people to do strange and inhumane things.
So, what is metal then? Metal is heavy. Metal is about having a good time whilst head banging to your favourite band or while playing a really deep, heavy riff on your guitar. Metal can quite often be political, it sometimes can be sad, some of it is happy and the way it is written makes you want to jump up and down with a fat smile on your face. Metal can be anything really, just play it really fast or in a really low tuning or a combination of both with a lot of really technical riffs and some brutal vocals, and it's metal! This a very vague and not too accurate description of metal, but you get the idea! It is more important that you know what it isn't!
I have been told countless times that metal is for dumb people and that there is nothing to it at all... Well folks, you're all wrong! I would like to say that metal musicians are some of the most technically skilled musicians there are. They can play real fast and real slow, they can do it all in pretty much any time signature, they plays notes that "normal" musicians would never think of playing together AND make it sound good!
So, is metal strictly a genre for people who are anti-Christ? Just recently I was browsing in Look & Listen (www.lookandlisten.co.za) and was amazed when I stumbled upon a CD called "Scandinavian Metal Praise". Initially I was a little hesitant, but decided to give it a listen. WOW! I have never heard such amazing, hair raising praise and worship! Double bass, epic guitar riffs (just the way the Scandinavians like it), guitar squeals, along with an angelic female voice. The combination making for an absolutely epic CD to listen to, you get your metal fix whilst praising the Name of God! Songs like Worthy Is The Lamb, metalized! \m/ Give it a listen on GrooveShark.
This is merely one band that has done this, however there are many many bands who classify under the Christian metal genre for their lyrics.
I will post a blog soon with some more details on metal, for those who are uneducated in the genre. All I say is, don't hate it til you've tried it! Just google Christian metal or metal and you will get more than enough links to some quality music!
